Injuries Running and How to Deal with Them

Injuries RunningRunners injuries are among the most common of the injuries I treat. Injuries running can be painful and interfere badly with performance for serious runners – sometimes even signaling an end to a promising career.

I once had to tell a very talented young man that he simply had to give up running 10k races as he had the build and muscles of a rugby player and was too heavily built for endurance races – resulting in a constantly recurring running injury. We were both close to tears!

Whether you are a regular runner in training, or just run as part of your fitness routine, injury can be the bane of your life. When you pick up an injury, the only immediate treatment is to rest, apply ice, put on a compression bandage and elevate the limb ( the R.I.C.E routine). Obviously, this necessary course of action interferes with your routine, meaning your training goes backwards or you put weight on! This can be annoying and stressful, and the temptation is to start again before the injury heals properly – big mistake!

The articles on this page have been produced to help you deal with the common injuries and problems which plague people who like to run. We have tried to give tips and ideas that will work for you – maybe your problems stem from the way you actually run (gait), your footwear, or your pelvic and core stability.

Running isn’t just about using your legs! In fact, sometimes it’s nothing to do with your legs, but an imbalance somewhere else, such as your hip or your back  You may have legs like iron bars and feet that would do credit to a Kentucky Derby winner, but if you lean to one side when you run, sooner or later you will pick up an injury!

Running is a great way to lose weight and de-stress your mind. Follow the advice in these articles and you’ll be able to keep going.

All the best,
