We hear about exercise every single day. News channels, reality TV shows, newspapers and magazines all bombard us with scary statistics about how half of all the people in the western world are overweight and that more than half of us don't do half enough exercise!

People simply do not move around enough anymore. Planes, trains and automobiles take us everywhere we want to go - door to door. Now I'm not saying that you should try walking 5 miles to work every day, but even a small amount of exercise is immensely good for you, both mentally and physically.

Without exercise, we vegetate. Our muscles turn to putty, our joints stiffen, our heart and lungs don't work properly and we don't feel good. Add to that the fact that we eat and drink too much, and we have a ticking time-bomb on our hands.

Sure, we can - and do - try to control our weight by dieting, but dieting without exercising is like a broken pencil.

Pointless.

Advice on exercise is confusing. Government guidelines sometimes change from one day to the next; should we be doing 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week , 20 minutes most days, or what? And exactly what type of exercise should we be doing? Does housework "count"? What about playing tennis on a Wii?
